How not to give up your yoga practice during Christmas YTT India?

Holidays - a joyful time that we spend best with our loved ones. We love to choose presents for others and invent dishes that will win their hearts. But Christmas is a time when we can devote more attention not only to the family, but ... to ourselves. Today we are talking with Magda Bałdys, a yoga teacher at PortalYogi Online Studio - about holidays, meditation and winter yoga practice.

Do YTT India.

Do you spend time wrapping presents, cleaning and cooking before Christmas or do you still skip your yoga practice?

It is known that I do not bypass, but from the outside it may seem that I am bypassing. Practice is simply not always done on the mat. Asanas happen to me lying down, or I unwittingly take the position of a tree while cooking in the kitchen, and it is obligatory to siddhasana, in principle, whenever I sit down somewhere.

A few years back, I had to share Christmas time with my faithful mat, but I came to the conclusion that when I can't calmly and without jerking into an asana session, I will just do something else. I breathe and contemplate - this can be done during any activity (except meditation).

On Christmas, most of the "duties" I have a long time unchecked, at home it remains only to remove the top layer of dust ("clean the market" as my mother says) and do what you could not do before, i.e. cooking.

What asanas do you recommend especially during this winter period?

I have a holistic approach, which means I recommend at least one asana from each group. I love these warming up myself , because I have poor circulation and forever cold feet and hands.

I would like to mention 7 from my tops for winter:

Chaturanga Dandasana - A Stick Supported in 4 Points

holidays

Bakasana - Raven

holidays

Salabhasana - Position of Świerszcza

Salamba śirsasana - Head Standing

holidays

Dhanurasana - Arch

holidays

Urdhva Dhanurasana - Bridge

holidays

Ardha Matsyendrasana - Corkscrew

Your ways for Christmas in a slow rhythm?

The general rule is simple and everyone knows it, but few people can break the "yes-falls" barrier. Just don't try to make everyone happy by force. Together with each other.  Neither life nor Christmas are perfect and in my opinion it is not worth trying too much because the effect is usually worse. Someone will always get a missed gift, and the Christmas tree will fall over and the baubles will break out, the food will burn, someone will say something stupid at the table ... This is the real magic of Christmas for me and a chance to celebrate slow mode!

How not to give up yoga practice during Christmas?

I can see two ways. The first is to treat them as normal time. Holidays should bring added value, not rely on letting go of everything (and thus ruining hard-won habits). All these decorations, Christmas trees, gifts, great orders are something "extra" part of the ritual, which we are to prepare, put in the right mood to celebrate.

The second way is to choose a different type of practice at Christmas than on the mat. In order not to upset your loved ones who recognize that it is not proper to practice yoga on Christmas - lock yourself in the bathroom for a long bath, and spend some time on meditation or a pranayama session. Or choose the day you devote yourself to serving others, giving them all your time. This ennobles you and is a great opportunity to show your loved ones (and not only) full of love and empathy.
